From Glory to Glory ( Study 29 )
Resisting the Holy Spirit
Acts 7:51-53
"You stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, you do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do you."
Every sin wilfully committed against God, every known Christian duty willfully omitted, is grieving the Holy Spirit.
In the context of Acts 7, the author reminds the Jews
the greatest guilt of their forefathers in the wilderness: their sin of ingratitude.
For us, it is resisting the very means which God of His infinite mercy freely offers for recovering our souls from sin and bringing us to Christ, our only Saviour.
There are 3 ways we resist the Holy Spirit:
1. When we despise or ridicule things belonging unto God. Should we persevere in these sinful habits, we may in the end lose all reverence for holy things. With a soul indifferent to things spiritual, we die.
2. When we refuse to receive those doctrines of the gospel of Jesus Christ which He has Himself revealed; when the plain teachings of the Scriptures seem unto us "foolishness."
3. When we, in direct opposition to conscience, refuse the holy aid which alone could have preserved us, and willfully commit sin, knowingly violating the moral law of God.
Abba Father,
warned of the danger of resisting the Holy Spirit, let us watch and pray against it. Let us not resist Him in our lifetime and He will fit us for the full enjoyment of the salvation purchased by the Blood and secured by the intercession of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
