THE NEW JERUSALEM #12
Why is Heaven equated with a city ( Part 2 )?
We often think of Heaven as a place like a spa-resort that we go to when we die. But many believers are shocked it is going to be a garden city called the New Jerusalem.
But this New Jerusalem is the culmination of a theme that began from the beginning to the end of scripture ( from Genesis to Revelation ) which is the construction of the City of God.
The Garden of Eden anticipates a city and civilization. Humans ( like Adam and Eve ) were appointed as His vice-regents ( Stewards ). Their purpose was to be fruitful, multiply, and replenish the earth. In so many words, they were to fill the earth with people to co-rule in the presence of God.
But Adam and Eve were not obedient to their call. They allowed Satan to usurp their God-given authority. They were expelled from the Garden of Eden which symbolized the Presence of God.
Abba Father, the disobedience of our forefathers threw life into chaos as they allowed their authority to rule over the earth to be usurped by satan. Worse they themselves became subject to God's enemy. Thanks to Jesus we were redeemed from satan, from darkness back to Your Kingdom of Light.
N.B. Tomorrow we shall see how rebellious humanity builds an alternative city called Babel ( the Hebrew name for Babylon ).
