THE NEW JERUSALEM #13
Why is Heaven equated with a city ( Part 3 )
Rather than build God's Holy City as He originally intended, humankind went into rebellion and built an alternative city - traditionally known as Babel ( the Hebrew name for Babylon ).
Babel/ Babylon is the original godless city. It typifies the wonders that humans can accomplish as God-created beings ( e.g. in building an ancient wonder of the world known as the Hanging Gardens of Babylon ). But it also symbolizes their idolatry - in seeking to exalt the creature ( themselves ) over their Creator.
From Genesis to Revelation, Babel/ Babylon casts a long dark shadow and remains a symbol of man's pride, arrogance, and defiance - as humanity's futile attempt to govern themselves independently of God.
Abba Father, in contrast to Babylon, stands Your City of Zion/Jerusalem.
After David captured it from the Jebusites, it became the capital of Your Kingdom especially when the Ark of the Covenant ( the Symbol of Your Presence ) is brought and housed in the Temple at Jerusalem.

Tomorrow we shall study more about the contrast of Abraham's City and The Tower of Babel/Babylon.
