THE LIVES OF THE PATRIARCHS #59

THE LIFE OF MOSES #41

THE MOSAIC COVENANT #3

We need to understand how the Abrahamic Covenant is a prelude to the Mosaic Covenant.

A. What are the differences between the Abrahamic Covenant and the Mosiac Covenant?

1. The Abrahamic Covenant is referencing a tribe, where by the time God gives the Mosaic Covenant, the tribe has grown into a nation as was predicted in the Abrahamic Covenant.

2. The Abrahamic Covenant is placed in the first chapter of the Bible, in the book of Genesis, and the Mosaic Covenant comes later in the second chapter of the Bible, in the book of Exodus.

3. The Abrahamic Covenant is marked with signs with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

- A sign with Abraham that males must be circumcised and the changing of Abrams and Sarai’s name.

- A sign with Isaac was the building of an altar and called on the name of the Lord.

- A sign with Jacob includes him setting out a memorial stone.

A sign representing the Mosaic Covenant is Passover and the Sabbath.

4. God promises Abraham that he will have many descendants, and He promises Moses land and riches in exchange for the obedience of His people to get out of Egypt.

5. The Abrahamic Covenant is UNCONDITIONAL- God  undertakes to do everything on behalf of Abraham.

The Mosiac Covenant is CONDITIONAL. If His people want the blessings of Deut.28, they have to honour their part of the Covenant by following His leading in obedience.

B. Abraham and Moses as Spiritual Leaders.

One can also be encouraged to know that even though these were both great men of God, they had times of weakness and made mistakes as all humans do.

The reader will also gain a better understanding of what life was like during the time these events took place.

These Covenants were meant to be read by God’s people and to teach one how to know God and be closer to Him.

The Abrahamic Covenant reminds us that we are God’s people while the Mosaic Covenant reminds us of things we should do to be a better person.

They both lay the foundation for the coming of Jesus and make it so that one no longer has to make an animal sacrifice to be forgiven of sin. All someone has to do is to confess that he or she has faith in Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.

N.B. Tomorrow we shall continue to highlight the unique differences between these two great covenants in the Bible. Then we can appreciate the significance of both Covenants much better - how it impacted and affected our lives until now by pointing to Christ in the New Covenant ( Testament ).
