THE LIVES OF THE PATRIARCHS #55

THE LIFE OF MOSES #37

WHY WAS JOSHUA SELECTED OVER MOSES' SONS TO LEAD ISRAEL INTO THE PROMISED LAND?

In Joshua, you will see the spiritual legacy of sonship left by Moses.

For he was like a "son" to Moses' towering father-figure, a loyal disciple of such a great mentor.

Whereas Aaron was succeeded by his remaining two sons who continued to lead the Levitical priesthood, Moses' spiritual son Joshua continued the ministry of Moses as the leader of the nascent nation of

Israel founded by the 12 tribes.

But if we look deeper into the succession of Joshua, we can discern God's hand in it. It was not as some may think an independent manmade decision.

The primary lesson to draw from Joshua’s life is that God is faithful to His promises. God promised Abraham that his descendants would dwell in the land, and, under Joshua, God brought the people into the land that He had promised to give to them.

This act completed the mission of redemption that God started with Moses in bringing Israel out of Egypt.

It is also a type that points to the ultimate redemption that Jesus brings to the community of faith.

Like Moses, Jesus delivered us from bondage and slavery to sin, and, like Joshua, Jesus will bring us into the eternal Promised Land and everlasting Sabbath rest (Hebrews 4:8-10).

Is it a coincidence that Jesus’ name in Hebrew was “Yeshua” which translates to English as Joshua?
