THE LIVES OF THE PATRIARCHS #30
THE LIFE OF MOSES #12
THE ROD OF MOSES/ THE ROD OF JESUS
At Midian, Moses had a shepherd's staff which doubled as a walking stick and even a weapon.
It was just an unremarkable piece of wood but God intended to use it to convince both Israelites and Egyptians that God had sent Moses to be their deliverer.
In Exodus 4:2-5 God asked him "What is that in your hand?". Moses replied: " A shepherd's staff.". God told him to throw it down and it became a snake which turned back into a shepherd's staff once he grabbed the reptile by the tail.
" Perform this sign...Then they will believe that the Lord, the God of their ancestors - the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob - really has appeared to you."
This symbol prefigured Christ - who is greater than Moses - whom God used as a rod to bring deliverance to the whole world.
Like Moses' rod Jesus was cast down on the ground and became a curse for us ( Gal.3:10-13 ) and then was restored.
Jesus Himself dictated a letter to John for the Church at Thyatira quoting Psalm 2 - " You will break them with an iron rod and smash them like clay pots" ( Rev. 2:27 ).
As the rod of God's judgment at the End Times, He will save those who belong to God and smash those who reject Him.
Let us pray.
Lord, Thank You that You are for me not against me. How grateful I am that I am Yours. You wield the power to deliver or demolish. Thank You for Your words of comfort that I would not be cast away when You return to judge the world in true righteousness. In Your, anger Lord remember to show mercy towards us ( Habbakuk 3:2 ).
