GOD'S MOST HOLY NAME: YHVH #5

In yesterday's lesson, we could see how the people of Jesus' day thought they knew what God was like.

They had the stories of the Patriarchs, the demands of the Law, the rituals of the Temple, the preaching of the prophets to shape their theology. 

But their picture of God was incomplete. It lacked details and clarity.

Jesus filled in the gaps about what God was like. He finished the sentence that God gave Moses which begun as " I AM WHO I AM" ( Exodus 3:14 ).

Jesus brought clarity to what was unclear by saying:

1. I AM the living bread that came down from heaven ( John 6:51 )

2. I AM the light of the world ( John 8:12 )

3. I AM the gate ( John 10:9 )

4. I AM the good shepherd ( John 10:11 )

5. I AM the resurrection and the life ( John 11:25 )

6. I AM the way, truth, and the life ( John 14:6 ).

7. I AM the true grapevine ( John 15:1 ).

In just 7 statements, Jesus taught the most concise and comprehensive expression of His character, His purpose, and His provision.

And in telling us who HE IS, Jesus also told us who WE ARE.

Without Him we are nothing - we are His sheep who need His shepherding; we will be spiritually starved without His living bread; we will be lost in darkness anywhere He is not; we will be defenseless against the forces of evil, nor will we have His provision for our needs, His guidance for our future.

Without Him, we will have no hope beyond the grave, no knowledge of what is true, no resources nor security in life.

Please hearken to this warning of our Lord - " Unless you believe that I AM who I claim to be, you will die in your sins." ( John 8:24 ).

Let us pray.

Lord Jesus, who You are is everything to me. 

As our great I AM, You are everything I need - for sustenance in this life, to live in Your light, to tap into the power of Your Spirit-filled life, to walk in Your way, and remain connected to You from the clutches of sin, death and the devil.

Thank you for teaching me that You are the revelation of our Father God's I AM.

Indeed You are the Living Word of God who remains the same yesterday, today, and forever ( Hebrews 13:8 ).
