THE LIVES OF THE PATRIARCHS #28

THE LIFE OF MOSES #10

GOD'S MOST HOLY NAME: YHVH #4

God revealed Himself to Moses in a way He had never done with any other Biblical character.

He divulged to Moses His personal Name YHVH.

The Name was so holy that God's people would not say it aloud.

So when Jesus came along taking this Name upon Himself, the Jewish leaders were justly offended.

What exactly did Jesus say that provoked their fury and wrath?

He said: " I tell you the truth before Abraham was even born, I AM!" ( John 8:58 ).

He could have said it more simply: " Before Abraham was, I was ". But Jesus was claiming far more than that.

His hearers understood Him too well for they took up stones to kill Him for what they heard as a blasphemous claim to deity.

Jesus' two words - I AM- expressed His deepest identity - the ultimate expression of who He is.

He took upon Himself the holiest and divine Name of God - saying, " That is My name: I AM."

God always wanted His people to know Him personally as He truly is.

So He has revealed Himself - not only through His Name - but also through His glorious presence, through the Word, and through His miracles on behalf of His people.

But these revelations all led up to a definitive revelation in the Person of Jesus.

The author of Hebrews knew this and wrote: " Long ago God spoke many times and in many ways to our ancestors through the prophets. And now in these final days, He has spoken to us through His Son." ( Hebrews 1:1-2 ).

The Son shares not only His Father's nature but also His Name YHVH.

Let us pray.

Heavenly Father, You are the great I AM ( YHVH )

I stand amazed that You have seen it fit to reveal Yourself to me in Your personal Name and again in Christ who bears the same Name as Your Son - the Name above all names.

This is altogether too wonderful that He is up close and personal as You are to me.

As you told Your servant Moses in Exodus 3: 13-15

"This is My eternal name, My name to remember for all generations."

Thank You for this revelation of who You really are - not a distant God who is far off- but One who is engaged in personal relationships, a God in whom we live and move and have our being ( Acts 17:28) as Paul testified to the Athenians:

"For it is in closest union with Him that we live and move and have our being; as in fact some of the poets in repute among yourselves have said, 'For we are also His offspring.' "
