LESSONS FROM THE LIFE OF JACOB #61
THE CHANGE OF JACOB'S NAME TO ISRAEL
What is the big deal about changing one's name in the Bible?
“He said to him, ‘What is your name?’ And he said ‘Jacob.’ Then he said, ‘Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with men, and have prevailed’” (Gen. 32:27-28).
Jacob’s new name hints at his newfound future in God, but we are also told he is called Israel because he has prevailed in his struggle with God and men (Gen. 32:28).
Let's not miss out on the important revelation of Jacob's confessing the negative aspect of his name.
For while confessing he is a deceiver who lives up to his name, Jacob also yields to the Lord when he surrenders his name as a supplanter - one who cheats.
This dual aspect of yielding and confession of sin is what today's devotion is all about.
Jacob prevailed in this battle by admitting His guilt and absolute dependence on the Lord, clinging to Him with all his might.
We also see God's dual nature towards him - His justice and mercy.
He may fight against us - as it were - with His left Hand, but is patently for us with his right Hand.
Let us imitate Jacob and cling to God for His blessing so that we may see the good things He has for us.
But after confessing our sin, we may want more of Him and less of what His right Hand can provide.
In short, like Jacob we should learn how to love and serve God in true worship for who He is rather than to look to Him as a perennial Provider of material blessings.
